More than 27,000 key aviation professionals including current and prospective business aircraft owners, manufacturers, and customers gathered in Las Vegas to attend NBAA’s 2015 Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition.

The 2015 NBAA convention featured over 1,100 indoor exhibitors including RF System Lab’s Jess Kuznicki and Zack Wessels at the Las Vegas Convention Center.  This event also included nearly 100 business aircraft on display at Henderson Executive Airport and dozens of education sessions.

Jess and Zack had a great experience presenting the VJ-Advance (VJ-ADV) video borescope to new and existing customers in the rapidly growing small business jet engine industry.  Attendees were able to see the easy to use VJ-Advance video borescope in action with hands-on presentations.

There’s no other aviation show that matches this massive event.  It was the strongest edition of the annual show since 2008 with guest speakers including FAA administrator Michael Huerta, Oklahoma governor Mary Fallin and Rep. Dina Titus (D-Nev.).  There were even some VIP guests including new business aviation advocate and country musician Dierks Bentley and “Miracle on the Hudson” pilot Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger.  The booth was extremely busy and provided a great opportunity to network with extremely qualified customers.

RF System Lab has recently acquired a variety of impressive customers.  We are excited to announce the latest VJ-Advance video borescope (VJ-ADV) purchases in the aviation, engineering, and power generation industries.

Our latest customers in the aviation industry are Constant Aviation and Sikorsky. Constant Aviation, one of the fastest growing MROs in the country, took advantage of RF System Lab’s no-cost demo program when their current videoscope was out on repair. They were extremely impressed with the ergonomics and overall performance of the VJ-ADV, and when they found out about RF System Lab’s low repair costs, they outfitted each of their locations with a brand new VJ-Advance articulating video borescope.

Sikorsky, designer and builder of some of the world’s most advanced helicopters for commercial, industrial, and military use, is utilizing the VJ-Advance Video Borescope to maintain the S-97 Raider; a Light Tactical Helicopter that can reach speeds up to 220 knots. The VJ-ADV’s extreme portability was a big selling point for their rotorcraft inspection needs.

Danfoss Group Global, a leading manufacturer of valves and fluid handling components for HVAC and industrial applications, purchased two 3.9mm VJ-ADVs to trouble shoot hydraulic pumps on large bulldozers. The articulating 3.9mm VJ-ADV was the perfect tool for navigating through slim insertion points required by this application.

UGI Energy Services is a new VJ-Advance video borescope user in the power generation industry.  They discovered the VJ-ADV at the 2015 Western Turbine Users Group, where RF System Lab Senior Sales Consultant, Casey O’Tool, was exhibiting. After trying out the video borescope on their equipment, they invested in a VJ-ADV for valve and pipe inspections. The versatile VJ-Advance is a great addition to any power generation facility’s tool kit and is the ideal inspection tool for preventative and corrective maintenance efforts.

ASME Turbo Expo will celebrate its 60th year during its four-day exposition, taking place June 15-19, 2015 at the Palais des Congres in Montreal. Recognized as the “must-attend event for turbomachinery professionals,” ASME Turbo Expo promises a dynamic keynote session, a technical conference that sets the world standard for turbine technology events, and a premium exhibit hall packed with the latest in turbine products and services.

Joining that exhibit hall is RF System Lab, makers of the high-quality VJ-Advance articulating video borescope. Turbine maintenance experts will be able to do a live demo of the VJ-Advance at RF System Lab’s booth, #224, to test out the joy-stick controlled articulation and high-resolution, onboard image and video capture first-hand.

Zack Wessels, RF System Lab borescope expert, will be onsite in the exhibition hall to provide information about how by adding an articulating video borescope to their preventative and corrective maintenance procedures, companies can save a significant amount of money and time.

The second quarter of 2015 is off to a good start for RF System Lab. We are proud to announce a group of impressive companies from a variety of industries as their latest VJ-Advance (VJ-ADV) borescope customers. A few of the industries represented below include aviation, power generation, automotive, and casting.

Representing our newest customers in the aviation industry are Ryan Air and Rotortech Services.  Ryan Air, an Alaska Bush carrier that specializes in air cargo shipping, required an inspection camera for PT6 turbine inspections on fixed-wing aircraft.  They selected the portable VJ-ADV because of its ability to operate fully in rugged conditions and extremely low temperatures.  Rotortech Services, located in the much warmer Palm Beach, Florida, provides state-of-the-art maintenance and repair services to helicopters.  They took advantage of our free demo program after visiting RF System Lab’s booth at this year’s HAI Heli Expo.  Rotortech utilizes the VJ-ADV for Turbomeca Arriel inspections on Airbus rotorcraft.  The extreme portability of the AA-battery powered VJ-ADV, weighing in at less than 2lbs, was a big factor in Rotortech’s purchasing decision.

Consolidated Edison (Con Edison) is a new VJ-Advance video borescope user in the power generation industry.  Con Edison, one of the largest investor-owned energy companies in the United States, was looking for a high-quality tool to complete internal transformer inspections.  The power company selected the 6.9mm diameter VJ-Advance video borescope for their routine internal RVI of their transformer generators.  Con Edison needed to complete these routine inspections with oil still present in the transformers, which is why they selected the VJ-ADV, whose sturdy insertion tube can be submerged and still articulate without issue.

We at RF System Lab are proud to have an important member of the automotive industry, Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles (FCA Group).  FCA Group, an international auto group that is a merger of Fiat and Chrysler, needed a video borescope to inspect the body-side box chambers on the vehicles they manufacture.  They had been using a snap-on borescope but were looking to invest in a higher quality tool that featured precise articulation.  RF System Lab is grateful that FCA Group made the investment in the VJ-ADV to complete future inspections.

Joining our list of clients in the casting industry is Fredon Corporation.  Fredon Corporation, a company that specializes in intricate parts, assemblies, and materials, was looking for the best inspection camera for ensuring the complete removal of burrs and residual sand.  The super-slim 3.9mm VJ-ADV was able to smoothly and efficiently navigate through critical core passageways to check for any signs of FOD, which made Fredon’s purchase decision an easy one.

Last month, Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) was named champion of the college division at the 2015 Aerospace Maintenance Competition. Along with the glory, prizes, and bragging rights that come with that victory, SLCC was also given a VJ-Advance video borescope, compliments of RF System Lab.

We at RF System Lab are strong believers in hands-on education, which is why we are ecstatic that we had the opportunity to donate a VJ-Advance articulating video borescope to a deserving school. We had the chance to speak with Jaime Horning, Assistant Professor & AMT Advisor at the Aviation Maintenance Technology (AMT) program at SLCC, about their AMT program, SLCC’s approach to hands-on learning, and how the VJ-Advance will impact their curriculum.

SLCC’s Aviation Maintenance Program has been around for approximately 30 years at the current facility, located in West Salt Lake City, Utah.  This phenomenal facility gives students a lot of hands-on, real-world experience, as well as the opportunity to complete the program for their Airframe and Powerplant certificate.  Additionally, many elective courses are available, allowing students to enter the field above entry-level.

A breakdown of SLCC’s program is as follow: Lectures take place in a classroom environment with some minimal hands on such as drafting and wiring.  There are three lab arenas used for several hands-on tasks.  The first arena is for reciprocating engine teardown and overhaul, magneto overhaul and carburetor overhaul along with other required tasks per SLCC’s CFR 147 Curriculum.  The second arena is for composite repair, sheet metal fabrication, and painting.   The third arena is a turbine engine teardown lab.  SLCC also has a hanger that houses various aircraft that the students work on to gain hands-on experience on actual aircraft.

While SLCC currently uses several different types of borescopes to perform turbine engine inspections and reciprocating cylinder inspections in power plant courses, the addition of the VJ-Advance video borescope will help to strengthen SLCC’s NDT coursework.

“The VJ-Advance video borescope is, hands down, the easiest borescope to use and the image clarity is remarkable.  It is an asset to be able to take pictures during the inspection and use the images from the flash drive to present during lecture,” explained Jaime Horning.

Horning went on to state that the addition of the VJ-Advance will change the course of SLCC’s AMT program, exposing students to the exact equipment that they will be using in the field.  He added that because AMT students at SLCC will have been trained using equipment like the VJ-Advance, employers will not have to not spend time and resources to train entry level A&P’s on how to use specific equipment; a benefit for both parties.

“The students at Salt Lake Community College Aviation Maintenance program are excited that they have a new tool to use,” Horning stated.  “Especially knowing that they are up to date with current equipment and that when they get out in the world of aviation they are well-prepared due to the equipment they’re exposed to and the quality of instruction they receive at SLCC.”

One of the most attractive features of SLCC’s AMT Program is the emphasis on hands-on learning with current technology.  SLCC understands that hands-on training is a key element to what future AMTs will do in their craft as a professional aircraft mechanic.  The program’s goal is for students to be employable and to excel in their career in the aviation maintenance industry.  That is why, especially with the way the aviation industry is moving to more advanced technology, it is crucial for SLCC’s program to stay up to date with the most current information and technology.

“It is so vital to allow students to practice what they learn in the classroom.  We all take pride in what we do in the world of aviation,” acknowledged Horning.
