Zack Wessels, RF System Lab Sales Consultant, recently returned from the National Agricultural Aviation Association Annual Convention (NAAA 2014). RF System Lab exhibited at a number of aviation tradeshows in 2014, but NAAA was a turning point for us. NAAA 2014 marked the introduction of the VJ-Advance video borescope to the agricultural aviation industry.
NAAA 2014 took place in Louisville, KY from December 8-10, 2014 and is recognized as the world’s largest tradeshow for agricultural aviation. Zack Wessels was on site in the exhibit hall presenting the VJ-Advance video borescope to conference attendees. Zack was extremely impressed with how well-run the show was and that the exhibition hall layout was beneficial for everyone that bought a booth. “It was great to see a show where there really were not any ‘bad booth positions’,” said Wessels.

The 2014 Aircraft Airworthiness and Sustainment (AA&S) Conference is coming up, and RF System Lab is exhibiting. The conference is taking place April 14-17 at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel in Baltimore, Maryland. AA&S is a conference that strives to address airworthiness and sustainment concerns that have increased exponentially over the past decade in the aviation and military community.
As stated on the 2014 Aircraft Airworthiness and Sustainment conference website, “The AA&S Conference provides a unique opportunity and forum for inter-agency collaboration on today’s airworthiness and sustainment issues, many of which are common to military and commercial aircraft and space vehicles, by advancing technology and incorporating lessons learned.”
Joel Riling, a 26 year retired Navy Pilot and current RF System Lab Vice President for Government Programs, will be onsite at the conference to present the VJ-Advance (VJ-ADV) video borescope. When asked about the conference, Riling replied “I am looking forward to meeting with all of the Defense contractors and State and Federal agencies to show them our affordable high quality video borescope. Lockheed Martin, Sikorsky and many others have realized significant savings and are currently using the VJ-Advance for Airframe Inspections.”

The VJ-Advance (VJ-ADV) video borescope was exhibited at Aviation Pros LIVE in Las Vegas, Nevada last month. Notable conference features included stimulating keynote speakers and an international maintenance “skills” competition.
Edward Thomas, RF System Lab borescope expert who was on site at this year’s event, said that the maintenance “skills” competition was unquestionably an entertaining component to the conference. The competition features teams of five to seven mechanics, many of whom are students in aviation maintenance schools, who are scored on time and efficiency in a variety of categories related to aviation repair and maintenance.
Thomas met many interesting attendees while showcasing and providing demos of the VJ-ADV at Aviation Pros LIVE. One encounter that he recalled was chatting with Ron Wilcox, a representative from NASA’s Neil A. Armstrong Research Flight Center. Ron informed Thomas about the Flight Center and the impressive DC-8 Airborne Science Laboratory aircraft. According to NASA’s website, “the unique flying laboratory collects data for experiments in support of scientific projects serving the world’s scientific community.” The plane has modified window ports to mount instruments and probes in their place and is fully operationally.
The DC-8 Airborne Science Laboratory Aircraft is an excellent example of a plane that could benefit from the VJ-ADV. Because the plane boards in Chile, if there are every any maintenance issues, their maintenance team is flown in…which costs around $10,000-12,000 for each instance. By instead utilizing the lightweight, portable VJ-ADV to handle remote visual inspection needs, they could save a massive amount of time and money.
